Hubpages Scam! Or, is it Actually Legit?
79
Before your bite my head off!
Hi guys, hope the title didn't have you already concocting a string of abuse to throw at me [laughing out loud]. I recently searched for Hubpages.com and was to surprised to see that people are still unsure whether this site is a scam or not. Hence, I decided to set the record straight by writing a Hubpages hub about whether or not it really is a scam:
The Hubpages.com Review
Hub Pages, or Hubpages, depending on how you like to refer to it, is not to be confused with hubpage.com, which is a website designed to be a 'hub' for linking to other promotional sites and offering blogging tools (I have not confirmed whether or not hubpage.com is a scam or legit).
Hubpages however I can confirm is the REAL DEAL! But, it depends on what you are looking for, as to whether or not you would consider it to be a scam ('how dare you', I can hear being muttered from fellow hubbers' lips ... but wait a moment, hear me out).
It is all about your priorities as to what you will experience here. If you are looking for an intelligent community, support, feedback and an audience for your thoughts ... you are most certainly int the right place. Hubpages is a wonderfully interactive website that generates a lot of traffic to your articles through its huge database of members and also through its high PR and placement in search engine results.
However, if you are looking to 'spam' your product, over promote your product, or include a million links to affiliate sites you sell for ... forget it! This would not be the site for you. Control is quite strict now, but that is to ensure quality content is provided. Spammers and 'black hat SEO' will not find what they want here.
Moreover, if you NEED MONEY and want an instant online solution ... you may consider this site to be a scam. Yes, it offers you money from your articles (via adsense, Amazon and eBay), but you are not likely to earn big until you have hundreds, or even thousands of articles. This may take you many years to do, so this is not the site for you if you want a 'quick fix' and instant income.
That said, I personally love writing here and the community involvement. It is also an excellent place to learn and develop yourself from the comfort of your own home. You can learn new subjects and post questions ... the best part being that the authors are normally MORE THAN HAPPY to reply in detail.
So, is Hubpages a scam? Well, it is all about perspective. Yet, as an article sharing website, it most certainly IS NOT A SCAM and is a great place to share. I hope that answers your questions about Hubpages. If you want to read another hubpage (or ten) of mine, please check out my profile here:

hopefully it like that, because I just enjoy this media
Nicely played. What a way to draw in the reader. :) Voted up. lol
Interesting read!
People who want instant cash. Are those people who are usually a victim of scam site.
You need to work to get paid.
Great job Brett. Sharing ...
Hi :)
Definitely not a scam!
It's a place for people, who enjoy writing and reading.
And youwe retain copyright over our writing. Some sites don't allow that and I consider that to be a bit iffy.
Hahaha the ol "Scam" on the title review type article. You got me with this one.
I agree with everything you say in this hub. I have found this site to be very beneficial to me. It depends on what you are lookiing for as you say. You get out of this site exactly what you put into it. I love it here also and enjoy the feedback. Good hub and I'm so glad to read it.
Hi Brett, a very clever article. You're totally right about perspective. Personally, I'm on hear to write and build a reputation, the money will hopefully come with the time and hard work.
I like this hub as well, because it serves as a subtle reminder to read the whole article before commenting. Great stuff. Voted up.
I must admit I'm still trying to figure out how HubPages works exactly, but I don't consider it a scam by any means. My personal sites perform 100 times better than my hubs as far as traffic, but the interaction just isn't there. Sometimes a writer wants to know what their reader thinks, more than they want traffic, that's what keeps bringing me back here. Great article voted up and funny.
This hub is simply wonderful and interesting, voted up. thanks for pulling my legs and helping me land safely though.
Brett, that was too smart of you. :) But you need not have given me a shock to get me to read your Hub! Ha, Ha..I love to read what you write anyway. Yeah, close on to two years, of which I have been active only for the last six months, and now addicted to this site, I know only too well why I come here. I love the comments of co-hubbers, and I love to read of all the interesting things they have to say. As I do not have an adsense, which had an earlier issue that I have yet to get resolved, I earn nothing from writing here. But I don't mind. Great hub, you put your finger just on the spot. Voted up and away.
This was a great article. You had me a little confused at first with your title ;) Thanks
Very nice hub - I too got caught by the title and sort of had the same initial reaction as Tammy S. LOL
I had to read this after seeing the title.. I had an uh-oh moment. :) With all the recent lack in security and constant theft of our work, I started to wonder this for myself. But, I guess defending our work comes with the territory. Very interesting!
Yikes, Brett, your title is a shocker. Since you are the author, though, I knew that you'd bring balance in the article, which you did.
When I first started here I was concerned about getting involved in too many writing sites. I was already writing for Xomba.com. However, once I got here I was hooked. It is definately not a scam if you are looking to get your writing out there and read. However, if your promised millions and you come here - you definately won't get what your looking for. Great straightforward hub with interesting viewpoints. I think alot of people that come here need to realize this before they think this is a get rich quick scheme. It's not - it's hard work. Thanks for Sharing your thoughts!
I think there is enough evidence that there is no scam on HubPages. Although I am relatively new, I already see traffic increasing to my hubs and am seeing some income from them. Mostly, I appreciate the forum, community and format for creating hubs that I can easily share with friends, family and others that find my niche interesing.
Thanks for SHARING:)
Brett.Tesol hub pages does have it's drawbacks from a corporate standpoint. We as a corporation pay taxes on our unpaid income quarterly. One thing we have learned is most places which are "Free" have very little value or none at all. I don't understand how anyone can call something they don't pay for a scam no matter how bad it is. I also realize now social sharing creates back links which increase search engine value and change placement of hubs on them. It is all about how we use what we have been given. Thanks for SHARING.
Isn't it sad that there are so many scams out there that we even have to ask the question? I agree that perspective makes the difference--what is it you are looking for? HP is a great place to practice, to grow as a writer, to network, and to gather feedback to improve your articles. I've also made some pretty awesome friends through here, as well. Thanks for SHARING (and loved your "Sharing" Hub as well). :-)
I too wish I had more time (and talent) to wrute articles. I am truly enjoying my experience here. People are very supportive and there are so many great writers here. Thanks for sharing this hub:)
HubPages is never a scam and will never be a scam. OMG! Why would anyone even think of that?
A scam is something that promises you to make money if you buy their product. They make money teaching you a pseudo effective way to make money. THAT is a scam.
I love HubPages!
I've only been here a little over two weeks and I absolutely love it! I found HubPages through a friend of a friend. He said he made a "couple hundred" per month after he'd been here for a couple of years. I like the idea of making money, but I really love the idea of sharing my work and getting feedback. Everyone is friendly and offers encouragement to each other. HubPages is definitely not a scam!
Thanks for SHARING!
Hi Brett. Hubpages is not a get rich quick scheme and it's not a scam as you rightly point out. Making money takes sincere, sustained effort and those who stay make hay.
Nice write.
I love it here, too. It's been a great experience! No, I'm not raking in millions (hehe), but it's nice to see that my numbers go up every day. Anything worth doing takes a lot of elbow grease and effort. :)
Great hub! I see the money I earn going up all the time. It's still infinitesimal compared to a 9 to 5 job, and I've been on here for 11 months, but at the rate I'm going, who knows how much money I'll make each month this time next year? Definitely not a scam; just not a "get rich quick" scheme.
Also, love the title! You got my attention right away. (I definitely cursed you out before I clicked on the link LOL.)
Great title. Got my attention. Thanks for the explanation.
My first question when I found HubPages was whether or not it was a scam. I wish I had seen this or something similar when I first started. Great hub. Thanks for SHARING.
Wow Brett! I thought you had gone over to the dark side. Ha ha... just kidding. I didnt't even know there was a site called hubpage.com until you cited it. I guess I just haven't gotten caught by that typo net yet.
At least now if someone suggests the word scam when I'm talking about hubpages, I'll know what they are talking about. Thanks for sharing.
David
A great article! I really like how you didn't approach it in a biased way. I must admit, your title got me to read it. Nice hook.
This is a good place to write, even if the pay is sick. The writing platform, help and forums are good. Doing photos is a snap. Even though I've been registered for two years, I just started writing a couple of months ago. Voted useful.
You tell it like it is Brett! Users can judge HubPages based on the balance between their priorities and personal experiences. This is definitely not a "get rich quick" scheme. It takes time and effort, and a whole lot of work! I think most people who are not serious quit within the first 1-3 months. This is a great place to read, write and share opinions and ideas, and make some money. I plan on building an empire! I have to say, I have not found another site quite like HubPages. I'm not going anywhere! Nice job. Voting up and sharing.

It all depends on what you want. As a get rich quick scheme, HP would be unlikely to work, but they would have to tell you that you would make lots of money to qualify as a scam. To make dependable money online, write for one of those sites that pay by the article up front - the down side is they pay a few dollars per article, and the topics are mindnumbingly dull. (I made $7.15 once on a article about the many different ways to use wallpaper. By the time I was done i wanted to wrap my head in wallpaper.)
HP in contrast is fun, you can write reams about your favorite obsessions, and start cool conversations with fascinating people you would not have met otherwise. It's a fact of life that really fun jobs don't pay amazing well - so there's your answer really. Do your fun writing, have a blast, maybe make a little money, probably not alot. Or do the drudgework of wallpaper articles, and get some guarenteed money. Take your pick.
Nice one Brett, great hub and very informative too.
hubpages is vindicated lol

The title definitely intrigued me! I concur that Hubpages is a legit site, but I agree with you that it's not one where someone could make money quickly. From my point of view, Hubpages is just a fun hobby. Frankly, I don't make enough from it to be able to consider it anything else, and if I do need to earn money then I find that any job work (part-time, full-time or even just odd jobs) gives more money earned per hour worked. That's just from my experiences. I know there are some hubbers that are making quite a lot... but I'm not one of them! I think if someone is looking to write on Hubpages then they can rest assured it's not a scam... but like you said it can take a really long time to earn anything. Right now for me it's a hobby.
You are right - a lot of people say HubPages is a scam because they want to earn hundreds of dollars in a day. I love HubPages and I think it's the best-paying writing website in terms of residual income.
Voted up and useful.
I hadn't heard of the other website you mentioned. I love it here and plan to stay for a while.
No, Brett, I don't think it's a scam -- I think it's an effective way to get your articles published with illustrations, links and ads, without going through the hassle of setting up your own website each time. Voting this Up and Interesting.
I love it here! Just wish I had more time to write articles. Great unbiased balanced viewpoint.
