Free Holiday for Writers
70
Now, I can tell that you are already wondering what's the catch is. But, for this, there is no catch. I just wanted to share a way to make some extra money writing, while taking a holiday in some tropical country (or wherever takes you fancy). The only 'catch' may be a little bit of forward planning.
There are a few ways to go about this and how you approach things will also depend on your experience and gift of the blag. The way you earn money from taking a holiday is to purposely choose countries that use English as their selected second language. When a country has a good tourism industry and uses English as their second language, there is a big pool of opportunities waiting for a native writer to dive into. There is sure to be advertising, promotional materials, websites, travel guides and more - all written in English and needing the eye of a native writer.
Depending on the market and company you choose to approach, you can decide whether to edit or write. The best way is to find something online (or while you are there) and offer your skills to improve their company. A lot of these businesses have local writers that are using their 'English as a second language' writing skills to produce the articles. Their work can range from being extremely good, to being almost unreadable. However, the the main reason companies do not directly employ native English writers is the expense of doing so (or at least the perceived cost).
This is where you send a friendly email offering your services via the internet, explaining that your work would be relatively inexpensive and could dramatically improve their company's output. They will almost certainly ask what you will want in exchange for your services and will want to see how good your writing is. The price is something you will need to work out, however, please look into local costs and salaries before setting a price. Then you need to show what you can do to improve things, and although this part is unpaid, I recommend putting some real effort into the first piece, as it may be the anchor that will secure a reliable (although slightly swaying) additional income for your future.
So far, this all sounds easy. The part you will have to investigate on your own is the taxation laws and bank account opening procedure for the country for which you pick. When you open an account, remember to sign up for internet banking, as this will then allow you to collect your money via online transfers.
This really can work, I have made money this way and I know people that continue to make extra money from doing this (from 100-900 GBP per month). So, why wait for the holiday you can afford, when you can have the holiday that pays you back everything it costs and more.
Oh, one last tip, make sure that you have a good grammar guide. When English is used as a second language, they will have a far better understanding of grammar than most native speakers. Therefore, especially for your sample piece, it is very important to use correct spelling and grammar.
Good luck! and if you pull this off, please let me know what you manage to land yourself.

This sounds like a great opportunity for someone who loves to travel and to write. Voting you UP, useful, and sharing with my followers!
I suspect that many of these countries have a lower cost-of-living than the U.S., making it feasible to live there for extended periods on a low salary. Voting this Up and Useful.
This is very interesting. I will have to try it out when I have time. Thanks for sharing!
Wow! I would never have guessed. I will keep this in mind and try it out. These days with governments cutting back on the country's economy money is very hard to come by. Thank you Brett.

This was a very interesting article that made me think and sometimes it actually hurts when I think too hard. It's always nice when someone else does the thinking and I can just read about it.
Your ideas sound like they have definite possibilities. My vacation of choice would be Scotland. I wonder if they consider English their second language or their first?
Either way, your article made me wonder what other possible revenue options are out that that I have not thought of.

What a great idea! More than once when traveling I've been amused at brochures that have been either translated from another language or written by non-English speakers. It never occurred to me to offer my services to edit them! Voted up, interesting, useful... Great article.
I really thought by reading the title that this was going to go in a whole different direction. I was about to yell... Damn right - us writers work hard and we deserve a special day for all our hard work... I mean they have Valentines Day and Grandparents DAy and Sweatheart Day.. we deserve Writer's day! And someone should send us on vacation for our efforts.

Hello,
I live in a tourist area of Brazil and some of the English translations here are awful. Menus for example, they could be improved. I have also gone to websites that claim to have an English translation and it is poorly worded.
You are correct about needing to check our own grammar, I am helping a woman here with her English and remembering grammatical rules isn't always easy.
Interesting hub.
