Mobile Website - Why are mobile sites important?

By

The world of Internet surfing has expanded over the years. The days of needing a big chunky PC are far behind us and the Internet has moved from just being at the desk to being in every part of our lives. Internet access has expanded dramatically, with WiFi, GPRS, 3G and 4G being accessible from almost any part of a developed country.

This means that people are using more and more mobile devices, as they want to stay connected whilst on the move. Although tablet PCs and net-books have contributed to the portability of the net, nothing has made more of a contribution than that of the smart phone. The smart phone has literally revolutionised mobile Internet access for billions of users that access email, surf or while away time on a free mobile game website.

Why do I need a mobile website?

The answer to the title is simple, handheld devices have small screens. Yes, you website may look beautiful to the average PC user, but when it is compressed into a 3.5" (or less) screen, it not only becomes hard to read, but also hard to navigate. On some phones, the shere amount of data from your website will fill up their memory and cause the page not to load. This means that you are losing valuable customers and getting a bad image, as your bounce (visit ans leave without exploring) will be much higher.

To solve this issue, you need to have a simple website design specifically targeted at mobiles. With this, you can have nice big buttons for the key areas, simplified text and for more advanced mobiles, even an option to switch back to the full site (such as with Tablet PCs). This will mean that your uses can find and do what they want easily, increasing the chances of sales and them spending time on your website. Not only this, but it will also mean that they are FAR MORE LIKELY TO RETURN, which is extremely important for a website business.

Isn't creating your own mobile website expensive?

Well, this depends on you and what your website is targeted at. Yes, a mobile website design can set you back $300-500, but it doesn't need to. Actually, a site I recently came across you can actually use to make money and create your own mobile website. This site offers step by step instructions, the software to easily create your design and full support. I've signed up for it and at a price of just $39 for the program, I think it is a good saving. Yes, I will have to learn how to use it, but it will not only save me money, it will mean that I will be able to create mobile websites for others ... an online business. I haven't fully explored it, but the system looks very intuitive and the guidance is easily understandable, even by a novice like me. If you want to take a look, you can check it out here:

http://www.mobileinternetbiz.com

(It is not an affiliate link and I do not earn from it, but compared to other options, it is the cheapest way I have found to get a fully functional mobile website).

This means that whether your website is for business, or a free mobile website, the cost is quite affordable. By having it mobile, it means you have a site that is accessible from anywhere, 24 hours a day! So, why not create your own mobile 24 website and give your business a boost.

Another option is to pay someone to do this for you. To do this, you will normally need to grant them access to your URL and Internet files, allow them to copy your information and reformat this. Costs will vary, but most will charge at least a few hundred dollars for this.

Either way, having a mobile website ensures that your market is larger and that you do not lose those valuable mobile visitors ... every little helps in the world of the web!

I think a mobile website is especially important if your audience is the younger generation who may never get onto the web except through a smartphone. Voting this Up and Useful. Socially SHARED.

The world is becoming more mobile every day. We learned quickly that text advertising doesn't pay at least not for us. We don't have mobile sites but it looks like we had better be headed that direction.

One of my outside sales people won't use a computer but she doesn't mind using her smart phone. Everything she does for the business is on the smart phone or a small digital computer. Thanks for SHARING this information which will help us.

Hi BlissfulWriter,

Yea, this is the mobile site, but you have to create it first. Once setup, depending on how it is accessed, the website will know whether to display as normal or in a mobile format (as Hubpages does). However, thankfully mobile device screens are getting bigger too, so reading a normal website is also possible without too much eye strain. The trick is just to make it easier for your visitors.

With more and more people surfing using their phones, it makes sense to have websites that is compatible with mobile. It is possible to have one site that supports both the desktop browser as well as mobile browser. The site will detect whether the user is viewing from a small device or large device and will render the site differently based on the device being used.

Hi jellygator,

I know exactly how you feel, the World Wide Web seems like a never-ending minefield of knowledge. As soon as you think that you found a way through, it seems likely wander onto a mine and get blown back a few yards. however, persistence is key, and search engines normally eventually reward those who stick around.

I'm just not there yet, but I know I will have to get familiar with it. UGH!

Hi Andrew Smith,

Thanks for the link. The idea of what I mentioned is to avoid the costs of specialist services or to setup your own service. However, which ever way you go, it is good to have a mobile site.
